Grill House West of Seminyak
Balinese pork-rib connoisseurs will already know about the celebrated grill house from Ubud, the Naughty Nuri’s Warung on Jalan Raya Sanggingan. But if you happen to be in the southern part of the island (and craving for some finger lickin’ good grills) you need not go too far, as this Batubelig extension has landed just west of Seminyak. Here, savour the well-known grilled de lights the island’s legendary name in pork ribs has to offer, and more. Naughty Nuri’s specialises in succulent ribs and chops, but also serves a range of dishes from ‘appeteasers’ to salads, soups, sandwiches, steaks, Asian selections, and burgers, not to mention, notorious signature martinis.
Getting to the ‘Pen’
Cruise along the Jalan Petitenget Road in Seminyak, then head west at the intersection onto Jalan Batubelig. You’ll see the smoking street-side barbecue with a colourfully painted life-size wooden pig beside it. The place is usually packed at dining hours, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Step inside into the main dining area (the ‘pig pen’ as the guys here fondly call it), and one of the waitresses clad in Nuri’s black-and-red uniform will greet you. Similar to the original Ubud Nuri’s, inside you’ll also find a laid-back setup with a breezy terrace, and the large wooden tables and benches that suggests ‘dining is best with friends’. Find even smaller variations of the colourful wooden pigs on the tables, and glance at the walls and ceilings showing even more pig inspirations – including a scantily clad Miss Piggy holding a martini, hovering over the bar.
Chops, Ribs n’ More!
Die-hard fans of the ribs and cocktails already know what they came here for. But those willing to explore the menu may find other barbecue options, as well as beers and drink specials featured every day of the week. Its ‘naughty’ weekly line-up includes Monday Mojito, Teaser Tuesday, Wanky Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, Funky Friday, Sexy Saturday and a Bloody Sunday, each highlighting 15% off special drinks. Cocktails here aren’t simply a drink; their preparation is a sight, involving the bar staff performing a unique, fun boogie as your drinks are shaken up. For first timers, almost everything, from the burgers, homemade gourmet sausages, rib-eye and tuna steaks, to cocktails and infusions, come as ‘juicy’ as they can be, but you must grab hold of the main fare to really know what Nuri’s is all about. The lengths of ribs marinate in a red, sweet succulent homemade sauce, before and during grilling. Topped with a slice of lime, the ribs land at your table with a choice of sides, from steamed rice to potato (wedges or mashed). Shortly, clean bones piled on the plate indicate a job well done and a search well ended.
Sorry, you cannot take those little piggies home, even if you had sworn by your martini and ‘the hair of your chinny-chin-chin’ that you faintly heard them squeal. Rest assured though, die-hard fans can go for some authentic merchandise available at its store called the ‘naughty market’, from printed T-shirts, singlets, umbrellas, beer holders, mugs, piggy banks and various porcelain and tableware.
